### Summary
WHAT IS THE WAGE & INVESTMENT DIVISION? The Wage & Investment Division (W&I;) serves about 122 million taxpayers who file upwards of 94 million returns each year. Key W&I; objectives are to provide high-quality taxpayer assistance, and to enable taxpayers to transact and communicate electronically to file their returns, make payments and receive assistance. W&I; partners with private organizations to provide assistance to such disadvantaged groups as elderly and low-income taxpayers.

### Responsibilities
WHAT DOES A TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN DO? As a Tax Examining Technician you will resolve inquiries regarding tax account issues such as tax delinquency, adjust taxpayer accounts and provide information about general Service procedures. In this role, you will analyze and take appropriate actions as identified in the specific position for which you are applying. Your assignments may include communicating with taxpayers and their representatives regarding their accounts on notices issued. If you are selected for a bi-lingual position you will communicate with taxpayers in Spanish as well as English.
This is a roster announcement open continuously and allows applicants to apply up to the last cutoff date listed in the announcement. The roster will be used to fill positions throughout the next 12 months. We are projecting approximately 30 vacancies may be filled during the life of this roster open period of 06/14/2018 to 3/25/2019 ? selections may be made through 07/20/2019. Contingent upon funding and space requirements, one or more vacancies may be filled in the individual PODs listed below as they become available in that location during the life of this roster. As a Tax Examining Technician you will:
Evaluate all available information and take corrective actions, such as credit transfers requests, re-computed tax, and/or penalty and interest.
Access relevant systems to view and/or update taxpayers' accounts regarding payments received, review status of the case, and/or to make account adjustments.
Enter data into automated system to adjust tax, penalty, and/or credit adjustments.
Recognize indications of tax fraud; make determinations and use sound judgment concerning taxpayers' data and responses.
Gain cooperation of taxpayers by explaining the best options available to resolve the problem or question, mutual interests, and to make sure they understand their responsibilities.
Interpret the law as it relates to the issues and if affects the performance and efficiency of the Internal Revenue Service.
Educate taxpayers on action(s) needed to achieve compliance with tax filing/liabilities.

### Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-5 LEVEL: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: researching and/or initiating actions on tax issues and all required information for correction of accounts and records; Interpreting taxpayer information; Verifying and/or adjusting taxpayer accounts; Securing payment of delinquent taxes; and/or determining financial, and uncollectible information. Other examples may include: Technical advisor, OJT coach, classroom instructor, or reviewer. OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: A Bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited college or university. OR??????????? You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.
GS-6 LEVEL: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: using an automated system to adjust tax, penalty, and interest; Recognized indications of tax fraud and abuse; Resolved problems, processed referrals, and/or worked with cases previously closed, bankruptcy, innocent spouse, employee cases, unpostables, restricted interest, and manual refunds; Performed phone duties; Proposed adjustments to income, deductions, payments and/or taxes and determined acceptability of the taxpayers' explanation.
GS-7 LEVEL: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: using business tax law, the IRM, the IRC, IRS collection techniques and enforcement actions, tax forms, notices, bills, and other documents to advise the taxpayer of options for meeting tax obligations; Investigative/probing techniques to solicit relevant information; Communicating specialized information orally or in writing with internal and external customers inventory management procedures; and have demonstrated the ability to provide clear and concise replies to taxpayers or their representatives.
- The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.
